Dorkness Rising Returns
Dead Gentlemen Announces a New Edition of THE GAMERS: DORKNESS RISING
The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is coming back to DVD! Featuring multiple commentary tracks, subtitles in many languages, outtakes, and deleted scenes in an all-new special edition, the DVD will be released region-free for sale worldwide.
For the new release, Dead Gentlemen Productions is partnering with sister company and distributor Zombie Orpheus Entertainment (ZOE). ZOE will release the DVD under their FAN SUPPORTED, CREATOR DISTRIBUTED model (link). This includes a broad non-commercial Creative Commons license (link), a copyleft approach to file-sharing and “piracy”, licensing the property for third-party commercial derivative works via the Creator Endorsed trademark (link), a digital release through distribution partner IndieFlix, and distribution to the worldwide hobby market through Paizo Publishing.
“ZOE is a company that believes in building long-term, sustainable relationships with a passionate fan base,” says Ben Dobyns, founder of Zombie Orpheus Entertainment. “Dorkness Rising is a fantastic fit for our approach to distribution and we look forward to helping the film continue to grow as we empower its fans to download, share, and remix the project.”
“We at DG are just really excited about what Ben is doing with ZOE,” said Don Early, President of Dead Gentlemen Productions, LLC. “Having direct interaction and access to our fan base has always been at the top of our priorities. With traditional distribution, you lose a lot of that. With ZOE, the fans get to directly support and participate in what we’re doing, and we get to stay connected. That’s what we’re all about.”
“We’re also excited about this new release of Dorkness Rising,” continues Ben Dobyns, “because this distribution model will help make a Gamers sequel happen much sooner. Our biggest sequel roadblock has been recouping Dorkness Rising’s budget. With the increased dollar value of direct distribution, we’ll be able to recoup and start work on a sequel much sooner than we could while waiting for traditional distribution models to pay out.”
The new DVD of The Gamers: Dorkness Rising is expected to release in April 2011. Fan content and submissions will be encouraged!

What’s with all the legal-ese?? Why is all this partnering necessary if you are simply maintaining your own distribution rights? I am confused. Why is making things more complicated good for Dead Gentlemen?
November 10, 2010
The ‘legal-ese’ above is extremely light, but it basically boils down to: if you want to make your work easy to distribute while maintaining certain rights, you release your work under a Creative Commons license. It’s a great system, designed to let you sell it, AND let your fans re-distribute it in certain ways, completely legally.
If they just said ‘download it!’ for free, with none of the above, they wouldn’t (necessarily) be able to make money off it.

I’m so happy that you guys really want to work on a sequel!
I’m a diehard movie buff when I found Dorkness:Rising on Netflix a few months ago. I’m a sucker for independent, low budget films that have a lot of unseen talent, and Dorkness: Rising is definitely on the top of the list!
I’ll definitely buy the DVD when it comes out! Good luck and get working on that sequel!

November 22, 2010
Awesome!! Finally region-free and PAL I hope – now I’m definitely gonna buy the DVD, since the 2008 version was not of much use here in Europe.
Thank you so much and keep on the good work!
November 23, 2010

November 26, 2010
Can’t wait! any update on the release? Still expecting April 2011?
November 28, 2010
Hey, how about a special combo pack with the original Gamers? I haven’t seen the original yet, but have been in love with DR ever since I saw it on Netflix a while back. Now I fill my days showing it to whoever I can. It’s a shame the new one doesn’t come out til April. Oh well, my brother gets the old one for Christmas and I get the new one in April. That’s fair, right? Hey, any thoughts on making a bluray. Hey, if its a stupid question, I’ll take the lashing in stride. If not, lash me anyways, I like it! 😉
December 2, 2010
I just watched the movie and i loved it. Awesome that i can get the special edition and help these guys keep making amazing movies. You guys rock!!!
December 5, 2010
Just finished watching Dorkness Rising for the 5th time and it still has me cracking up. The second the special edition come out, I will happily buy it again to support you guys. I know this much fun doesn’t come cheap.
December 31, 2010
Total waffle! Can’t wait for April!
January 9, 2011
Sounds great! I really hope this will be available for fans from Europe also 🙂
Must buy!
January 16, 2011
AWESOME! I’ve rented it three times already via netflix, but I want to OWN it. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find the movie in stock.
February 4, 2011
Awesome, I’ve been looking forward to this since I saw the movie. I live in France, zone 2, and I wanted to buy a copy of it since it’s only fair. I hope there will be subtitles in french!
Kudos on the great work! Take care, see you guys in april on my tv!
February 7, 2011
Sweet! Can’t wait for this to come out, definitely going to pick one up! Please post on Facebook to let us know when it’s available!
February 8, 2011
OMG!!!! I was about to get the DVD off of Amazon, but now that friend showed me this I’ll totally wait a few more months.
Epic! Can’t wait to get it, Dorkness Rising is on of my all time favorite movies…. in fact a lot of my friends love this movie. On Xbox Live we would get together like once a week to watch it on Netflix. We were super bummed when they took it off of the live stream list!
February 19, 2011
I’m with MercyMerciful. I keep checking Netflix to see if they put it back on instant play. Instead, I’ll buy it when it comes out.
Dorkness Rising is one of the most quotable movies I’ve seen. Can’t wait!
February 21, 2011
Trying to get an old copy of this is impossible. I’ve been waiting for two months from stupid Amazon. But if you’re re-releasing it with extras…I can wait till April! Is there a pre-order?!?!?!
February 23, 2011
I have watched Dorkness Rising about 100 times and I still chuckle at some of the lines:
‘please understand, the horny bard does not represent us..’
‘I’m Marty Grippa – y’see, I control zombie ninjas.. are they zinjas.. are they NOMbies?! I dunno!’
This movie was the reason I’ve gotten back into playing DnD
I’ll definitely be picking up the re-release and will be supporting the deadgentlemen with future endeavors.
Btw – you can pick up / purchase this title in the old format at any local gaming store or comic book shop (they typically sell both comics and rpg books, dice, etc)
March 6, 2011
Astral Audio Entertainment is definitely eager to promote the updated release … interviews, audio promos, you name it. The fact that this will be under the CC banner is an added bonus!
March 8, 2011
I can’t wait to purchase this. The cover looks awesome. More films please.
March 15, 2011
People will bow to it.
April 2, 2011
Okay, friends — it’s April 2011 – how do I get my hands on the DVD???
April 6, 2011
I’ve been showing my copy occasionally, and it never fails to get laughs. Next installment is much looked forward to. 🙂 Go DG!
April 8, 2011
Seriously, when is the release date. I WANT!!!
April 15, 2011
As soon as the new DVD is 100% awesomesauce.
April 17, 2011
Outstanding!
April 13, 2011
The distribution model is interesting, and the rationale is understandable. The implied respect for your fanbase is laudable, and the excitement of expectation is palpable.
I’m down for multiple copies.
Any news?
An update would be appreciated.
Thanks.
April 15, 2011
We’re doing daily updates at our facebook page — http://www.facebook.com/deadgentlemen

May 6, 2011
Can’t wait. I saw the Gamers 1 director’s cut on the Paizo site zone-free. Instant buy. Will help me while waiting for Dorkness Rising special edition!
May 16, 2011
Any chance to have on the disk a PDF of the “Mask of Death” D&D module?
More generally, if not, are there plans from Paizo to make it available somewhat?
May 17, 2011
Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising is my favorite gamer film ever! I can’t wait for the DVD release.
Until then, I’ll hide behind the pile of dead bards. 😉
